Tennessee Onions
Ingredients
- 2–3 large sweet onions (such as Vidalia), sliced into 1/4-inch rings
- 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
- 1 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme or Italian seasoning
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- Optional: chopped fresh parsley for garnish
Preparation
Step 1: Preheat the Oven
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray or a light layer of butter.
Step 2: Layer the Onions
- Arrange the onion slices in a single layer in the prepared baking dish. Overlapping slightly is fine.
Step 3: Add Seasoning and Butter
- Sprinkle the onions with garlic powder, dried thyme, salt, and black pepper.
- Pour the melted butter evenly over the onions.
Step 4: Add the Cheeses
- Sprinkle the mozzarella, Parmesan, and cheddar cheeses evenly over the onions.
Step 5: Bake
- Cover the baking dish with foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15–20 minutes, or until the cheese is golden and bubbly.
Step 6: Serve
- Remove the dish from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes.
- Garnish with chopped parsley if desired and serve warm as a side dish.
Tips for Success
- Sweet Onions: Use Vidalia or another sweet onion variety for the best flavor.
- Cheese Mix: Adjust the cheese ratios based on your preference or use a pre-shredded cheese blend for convenience.
- Crispy Top: Broil for the last 2–3 minutes for a crispy, golden cheese topping.
Variations
- Add Bacon: Sprinkle cooked, crumbled bacon over the onions before baking for extra flavor.
- Spicy Kick: Add a pinch of red chili flakes or diced jalapeños for heat.
- Herb Infusion: Use fresh thyme or rosemary instead of dried herbs for a fragrant twist.
