Cajun Salmon and Shrimp

Ingredients

  • 2 salmon fillets (6 oz each)
  • 8–10 large shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning (store-bought or homemade)
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for extra heat)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 lemon, juiced
  • Optional garnish: chopped parsley and lemon wedges

Preparation

Step 1: Prep the Seafood

  • Pat the salmon fillets and shrimp dry with paper towels.
  • Season both with Cajun seasoning, smoked paprika, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  • Sprinkle cayenne pepper if you prefer more spice.

Step 2: Cook the Salmon

  • Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Place the salmon fillets skin-side down in the skillet and cook for 4–5 minutes, until the skin is crispy.
  • Flip the fillets and cook for another 2–3 minutes, or until the salmon is cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

Step 3: Cook the Shrimp

  • In the same skillet, add the remaining olive oil and butter.
  • Sauté the minced garlic for 30 seconds, until fragrant.
  • Add the shrimp and cook for 1–2 minutes per side, or until pink and opaque.
  • Squeeze the lemon juice over the shrimp and toss to coat.

Step 4: Serve

  • Plate the salmon fillets and top them with the cooked shrimp.
  • Drizzle any remaining garlic butter sauce from the skillet over the seafood.
  • Garnish with chopped parsley and lemon wedges.

Tips for Success

  • Crispy Skin: Ensure the salmon skin is dry before cooking for a perfect crispy texture.
  • Don’t Overcook: Keep an eye on the shrimp to prevent them from becoming rubbery.
  • Homemade Cajun Seasoning: Mix paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, oregano, cayenne, and salt for a quick DIY blend.

Variations

  • Creamy Sauce: Add a splash of heavy cream to the skillet after cooking the shrimp for a rich, Cajun-style cream sauce.
  • Vegetable Side: Serve with sautéed asparagus, spinach, or a fresh salad for a complete meal.
  • Grilled Option: Grill the salmon and shrimp for a smoky flavor twist.
