𝐁𝐄𝐀𝐍 𝐀𝐍𝐃 𝐇𝐀𝐌 𝐇𝐎𝐂𝐊 𝐒𝐎𝐔𝐏
Ingredients
- 1 lb dried beans (great northern, navy, or a 15-bean mix)
- 1 smoked ham hock
- 1 large onion, diced
- 2 carrots, peeled and sliced
- 2 celery stalks, diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- 8 cups chicken or vegetable broth
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1 bay leaf
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- Optional garnish: chopped parsley or green onions
Preparation
Step 1: Soak the Beans
- Rinse the dried beans under cold water and remove any debris.
- Soak the beans overnight in a large bowl with enough water to cover them by 2 inches.
- Drain and rinse before using. (For a quicker method, boil the beans for 2 minutes, then let them soak for 1 hour before draining.)
Step 2: Prepare the Soup Base
- In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat a drizzle of olive oil over medium heat.
- Sauté the onion, carrots, celery, and garlic until softened, about 5 minutes.
Step 3: Add Ham Hock and Seasonings
- Place the ham hock in the pot with the sautéed vegetables.
- Add the soaked beans, broth, thyme, and bay leaf.
Step 4: Simmer the Soup
- Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and simmer for 2–3 hours, or until the beans are tender and the ham hock is falling apart.
Step 5: Remove Ham Hock and Finish the Soup
- Remove the ham hock from the pot. Shred the meat off the bone and return it to the soup.
- Discard the bone and any excess fat.
- Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper as needed.
Step 6: Serve
- Ladle the soup into bowls and garnish with chopped parsley or green onions, if desired.
- Serve with crusty bread or cornbread for a hearty meal.
Tips for Success
- Bone-In Ham Substitute: If you don’t have a ham hock, use a smoked turkey leg or diced ham.
- Thicker Soup: Mash some of the beans against the side of the pot or use an immersion blender for a thicker consistency.
- Storage: Leftovers keep well in the fridge for up to 3 days or can be frozen for later.
Variations
- Spicy Kick: Add red pepper flakes or a diced jalapeño for a hint of heat.
- Vegetarian Option: Skip the ham hock and use smoked paprika for a similar smoky flavor.
- Herb Blend: Add rosemary or sage for an earthy flavor twist.
