Sizzling Chinese Pepper Steak with Onions

Ingredients

  • 1 lb flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 large green bell pepper, sliced into strips
  • 1 large red bell pepper, sliced into strips
  • 1 medium onion, sliced into wedges
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger, minced
  • 1/4 cup beef broth (or water)
  • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce (optional, for extra sweetness)
  • Sesame seeds and chopped green onions (optional, for garnish)

Preparation

Step 1: Marinate the Steak
In a bowl, combine the sliced steak with soy sauce, cornstarch, and sesame oil. Toss to coat and let it marinate for 15–20 minutes.

Step 2: Prepare the Sauce
In a small bowl, mix oyster sauce, rice vinegar, hoisin sauce (if using), and beef broth. Set aside.

Step 3: Sear the Steak
Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large skillet or wok over high heat. Add the marinated steak in a single layer and sear for 1–2 minutes on each side until browned. Remove the steak and set it aside.

Step 4: Cook the Vegetables
In the same skillet, add the remaining tablespoon of oil. Stir-fry the onions, bell peppers, garlic, and ginger for 2–3 minutes until slightly tender but still crisp.

Step 5: Combine Steak and Sauce
Return the seared steak to the skillet. Pour in the prepared sauce and stir well to coat the steak and vegetables evenly. Cook for an additional 2–3 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld and the sauce to slightly thicken.

Step 6: Serve
Transfer the sizzling pepper steak to a serving dish. Garnish with sesame seeds and chopped green onions if desired. Serve hot with steamed rice or noodles.

Tips for Success

  • Thin Slices: Ensure the steak is sliced thinly for even cooking; partially freezing the meat makes it easier to slice.
  • High Heat Cooking: Use high heat to sear the steak and vegetables for that authentic wok flavor.
  • Customize Your Veggies: Add mushrooms, snap peas, or baby corn for additional texture and flavor.
