Old Fashioned Salisbury Steak

Ingredients

For the Steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80/20 works best)
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

For the Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tbsp ketchup
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water (slurry for thickening)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Steak Patties:
    • In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper until well combined.
    • Form the mixture into 4-6 oval-shaped patties, about 1/2 inch thick.
  2. Cook the Patties:
    • Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add a little oil or butter.
    • Cook the patties for 3-4 minutes per side, until browned but not cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Make the Gravy:
    • In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
    • Stir in the beef broth, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.
    • Bring the mixture to a simmer.
  4. Thicken the Gravy:
    • Stir the cornstarch slurry into the simmering gravy. Cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently, until the gravy thickens.
  5. Simmer the Patties:
    • Return the steak patties to the skillet, spooning some gravy over each patty.
    • Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and tender.
  6. Serve:
    • Serve the Salisbury steaks with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles, and pour the rich onion gravy over the top.

Optional Garnish:
Chopped parsley adds a fresh touch for serving.
