Cheese Bread
Ingredients
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 packet (2 1/4 tsp) instant yeast
- 1 cup warm milk (110°F/45°C)
- 3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg, room temperature
- 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a blend)
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
- Optional: 1 teaspoon garlic powder or Italian seasoning for extra flavor
- Egg wash (1 egg beaten with 1 tablespoon milk)
Preparation
Step 1: Activate the Yeast
- In a small bowl, combine warm milk and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for 5–10 minutes, until foamy.
Step 2: Make the Dough
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and optional seasonings if using.
- Add the yeast mixture, melted butter, and egg. Mix until the dough comes together.
- Fold in 1 cup of the shredded cheese and mix until evenly distributed.
Step 3: Knead the Dough
- Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes by hand or 5–6 minutes in a stand mixer with a dough hook, until smooth and elastic.
- Add a little flour if the dough is too sticky, but keep it soft.
Step 4: First Rise
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth or plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1–2 hours, or until doubled in size.
Step 5: Shape the Bread
- Punch down the dough and shape it into a loaf or divide it into rolls.
- Place the dough into a greased loaf pan or on a parchment-lined baking sheet for rolls.
- Sprinkle the top with the remaining shredded cheese and Parmesan.
Step 6: Second Rise
- Cover the shaped dough and let it rise again for 30–40 minutes, or until puffy.
Step 7: Bake the Bread
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Brush the top of the dough with egg wash for a shiny, golden finish.
- Bake for 25–30 minutes for a loaf or 18–20 minutes for rolls, or until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.
Step 8: Cool and Serve
- Let the bread cool slightly before slicing or serving. Enjoy warm with butter or as a side dish.
Tips for Success
- Choose Your Cheese: Cheddar gives a sharp, tangy flavor, while mozzarella adds a milder, stretchy texture.
- Add-ins: Mix in chopped herbs, cooked bacon, or diced jalapeños for extra flavor.
- Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze for longer storage.
Variations
- Stuffed Cheese Bread: Roll the dough out, sprinkle extra cheese in the middle, and roll it up before baking.
- Cheesy Garlic Bread: Add 1 teaspoon garlic powder to the dough and sprinkle minced garlic on top before baking.
