Old Fashioned Salisbury Steak
Ingredients
For the Steaks:
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20 works best)
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/4 tsp black pepper
For the Gravy:
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter
- 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tbsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water (slurry for thickening)
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the Steak Patties:
- In a large bowl, mix the ground beef, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper until well combined.
- Form the mixture into 4-6 oval-shaped patties, about 1/2 inch thick.
- Cook the Patties:
- Heat a large skillet over medium heat and add a little oil or butter.
- Cook the patties for 3-4 minutes per side, until browned but not cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
- Make the Gravy:
- In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the beef broth, ketchup, and Worcestershire sauce, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the skillet.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer.
- Thicken the Gravy:
- Stir the cornstarch slurry into the simmering gravy. Cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently, until the gravy thickens.
- Simmer the Patties:
- Return the steak patties to the skillet, spooning some gravy over each patty.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for 10-15 minutes, or until the patties are cooked through and tender.
- Serve:
- Serve the Salisbury steaks with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles, and pour the rich onion gravy over the top.
Optional Garnish:
Chopped parsley adds a fresh touch for serving.
