Smash Burger Recipe
Ingredients
For the Burgers:
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 blend for best flavor)
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- ½ tsp garlic powder (optional)
- 4 burger buns
- 1 tbsp unsalted butter (for toasting buns)
- 4 slices of American cheese
Toppings (Optional):
- Lettuce
- Tomato slices
- Pickles
- Sliced onions
- Ketchup, mustard, or mayonnaise
Instructions
1. Prepare the Beef Patties
- Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions (¼ lb each) but do not shape them into patties—keep them loosely packed for better texture.
- Season each portion with salt, black pepper, and garlic powder.
2. Heat the Griddle or Skillet
- Preheat a cast iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat for 5 minutes until very hot.
- Lightly grease with a small amount of oil or butter.
3. Smash the Burgers
- Place a portion of beef onto the hot surface.
- Immediately press down firmly with a spatula (or burger press) to flatten the beef to about ¼-inch thick. Hold for 10 seconds.
- Cook for 2 minutes, or until the edges are crispy and browned.
4. Flip & Add Cheese
- Flip the patty and immediately place a slice of cheese on top.
- Cook for another 1-2 minutes until the cheese melts and the burger is cooked through.
5. Toast the Buns
- While the burgers cook, toast the buns by spreading butter on the cut sides and placing them on the griddle for 30 seconds.
6. Assemble the Burgers
- Place the cooked patties on the toasted buns.
- Add your favorite toppings and sauces.
Conclusion
The Smash Burger is a game-changer for burger lovers! With its crispy edges, juicy interior, and melty cheese, it’s the perfect combination of flavor and texture. Whether enjoyed plain or loaded with toppings, this burger is a guaranteed hit for any occasion.
